Steptember is Right Around the Corner

America on the Move is a fabulous organization that is all about increasing physical activity and decreasing caloric intake.

Their website clearly states and promotes:

AOM’s own research proves that small, specific changes in food and physical activity can have a significant impact on health and effectively stop weight gain. Our research-based programs encourage people to move more and eat healthier by making two small daily changes:

  • Take 2,000 more steps (about one mile)
  • Eat 100 fewer calories (about a tablespoon of butter)
Engaging in AOM’s small changes approach can help participants achieve energy balance and stop the average national adult weight gain of one to two pounds a year.
Here are 100 ways to add steps
100 Ways to STEP IT UP!

and also 100 Ways to Cut Calories
Plan now to make it STEPTEMBER

Sneakers

We had our "commitment" bbq last night at Sarah's house. If there is anything that I've learned over time since trying to "increase physical activity" and "decreasing caloric intake" it's been to make SMART goals. That is to say it is imporant to  state one's goals that are  Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Trackable.  In the process it is very important to go public with one's goals. So, last night we celebrated Art and Michelle who are going to do the half marathon on October 17th. We also heard from Sarah, Amy, Andrea, Traci, Brenda and myself who are going to the entire marathon. Linda and Staci are potentials in the relay for the marathon. Bob and Mark are planning on doing the entire marathon but were not present to publically commit to the event.
Uta brought us the cake with the "sneakers" on it. However, we are not "sneakers" when it comes to our goals. We are out in the OPEN!

Quicker Quaker 5k 010910

It was a grand day at the Oatmeal Festival. Sue Ann and I enjoyed a great breakfast at the festival's Oatmeal Bar (which featured about 25 different toppings). As you can see from the pre-race picture, I loaded up on fruit and nuts.
The cold weather which has blanketed our community for the past few days appears to be easing up just a bit. The walk was sunny and fun. The community of Lafayette is hospitable and gracious.

Results for Ronald Glusenkamp:

You placed 798th out of 1086 finishers in a time of 45:08 for a pace of 14:32 per mile.

Out of 423 men you finished 354th. The winning time for men was 15:06.

For 55 to 59 year old men you were 23rd out of 33 finishers. The winning time for your age and sex was 17:50.

Walk in Love! New Year's Day 010110

"And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning — you must walk in it." 2 John 1:6

Happy New Year! Sue Ann and I did the Resolution 5k last night in less than 45 minutes. That's a pretty good time for a course that had some snow packed patches and dribbles and drabs of "black ice." While we were there we saw Sarah, Tina,Sylvia, Bruce and Bev. Congratulations to everyone who finished the race.

Pedometers are great little devices which enable one to keep track of one's steps.
In light of the passage from 2 John, perhaps someone could or should create a "love counter" as well. So, on this day of new beginnings, as John wrote so many years ago, "walk in love."
Peace,
rtg
